In the run-time architecture of a Web Designer application, the main building blocks are the web server, the USoft Page Engine, and the Rules Service. The communication between these building blocks takes place via several files (server pages (ASP or JSP), Data XML, Combined XML, GUI XML, XSL transformations) within the HTTP and JDBC protocol.

Several communication parameters can be set. Some of these parameters are set when publishing the web application from Web Designer, others are set when starting or modifying the Rules Service, and yet other parameters can be set in the Internet Services Manager.
